The apartment is an attic with sloping ceilings in a newly-constructed building in the centre of Lenzerheide, a well-known resort in the canton of the Grisons.
The clients’ request is very specific: two double bedrooms with en suite bathrooms, a childrens’ room with bathroom and a living area with kitchen, dining space and a large sitting area with a fireplace. Everything in contemporary chalet style, using natural materials and with a warm, soft flavour.
To achieve this all the partition walls were removed, and the space was divided using wardrobes, shelving and mobile walls in wood.
The apartment is characterised by three materials:
– wood: sanded oak was used to construct the main features, such as the floors, the attic ceiling and all the furniture (except the kitchen) as well as some walls;
– stone: brushed Grigio di Tunisi limestone was used as cladding for the bathrooms and the TV wall in the living area;
– brushed iron was used for the most disticntive decor elements.
The choice of wood was critical in giving the apartment a warm atmosphere without resorting to rustic taste. Not the classic pine or Tyrolean Swiss pine, but real oak, treated and sanded.
This and other decisions – like the use of sheet metal and glass in the kitchen and white cementine to finish the “bare” walls – make this apartment extremely elegant and welcoming, with a style that’s deliberately contemporary.
