Crystal Concrete

From glass to wood, from Corian to cement: new decorations for architectural surfaces

BHC focuses on micro-finishes with the presentation of “Crystal Concrete”, a decoration by Marco Piva on HD surfaces by Chimica Italia, a preview of 100% Design in London (18-21 September – Hall E242).
We met Marco Piva to learn more about the concept of these new decorations.

How was the idea of this decoration born and on what kind of surface is it made?
The concept of the “Crystal Concrete” decoration comes from the linear geometry of the crystal, a complex beauty that derives from the aggregation of parts and creates, in its interior, the further shape of the 6-pointed star.
The decoration can be realized on a variety of surfaces, from wood to glass, from metal to cement, but also on leather and fabrics, thanks to the technology that is able to reconfigure every type of surface.
On the occasion of the 100% Design fair, we present it on HD cement by Chimica Italia.

The world of surfaces for architecture is constantly evolving, the proposals on the market are more innovative and original each year. What is the current trend, seen from your highly experienced observatory in the sector?
In this delicate period of transformation, attention is increasingly focused on the qualitative aspect of design, which involves all the dimensions of the project and its protagonists.
For surfaces, it is necessary to try, experimenting and innovating, new interpretations of materials.
The result is no longer just a “decoration”, but a vibration on the surface able to create tactile and visual, perceptive and synaesthetic emotions.

Continue the collaboration with the BHC showroom, a real reference point for architects and interior designers on the world of surfaces and, now, a real “laboratory of ideas”. How was this fruitful synergy born?
On the occasion of this year’s Salone del Mobile, the operation FRAMEWORK, of which “Crystal Concrete” enters a part, and presents six structures, declined on different material supports. The collaboration with Carlo Tuzzi was fundamental in the way it was, and so we came into contact with the BHC showroom.

“Crystal Concrete” born for the foreign market or do you think it can be well received in Italy, despite the crisis in the sector?
I would not speak of a crisis but, as I said before, of “transformation” of the market and of new needs, both for the designer and for the end user.
Surely however “Crystal Concrete” is not born finalized to the foreign market. In fact, we live in a “glocal” market, where authentic values arise from a locality. These values express, if exposed and articulated in a sincere way, the intrinsic qualities of a culture, in this case the Italian one, that in the design sector and in the other the world values have been recognized.
It is therefore perhaps the opposite: I continue to look and promote the qualities that Italian Design does
